FSFILMMAKING: As you know, we’re sea-deep in research, relationship building, and course-mapping to create momentum in the promising new space of regenerative ocean farming as part of our1% For The Planetcommitment — and beyond. For those who aren’t familiar with regenerative ocean farming: it’s vertical underwater aquaculture with a mix of seaweeds (kelp—called brown seaweed) and shellfish. It has been widely identified as a key solution to climate change due to itspowerhouse abilities to sequester carbon, rebuild marine ecosystems, and supply a zero-input sustainable food source.
On January 24th, as the thermometer hovered below freezing (it was really, really cold), we arrived at the dock ofGreenWave's ocean farm, in Branford, CT, to interviewBren Smith, a commercial fisherman turned seaweed farmer, the founder of the organization, author ofEat Like a Fish, and a fantastic storyteller. After our interview, we struck
out on the water to film his team in action. The skies cleared, and it opened up into those idyllic blue flat-water days that only come a handful of times every winter. Cold hands but warm hearts, we couldn't have asked for a better day of filming, and can't wait to begin sharing this story with you in moving pictures.
Much more to come on this collaboration and our engagement in the space in 2022. Learn more and send us a message to get involved atfirestarterix.com/kelp.
